CAIRO, June 24 (World Daily Times) — Archaeologists in Egypt uncovered a burial cache at the Panhesy tomb site in the Matariya archaeological section of Ain Shams, and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said the find included jewelry, carved scarabs, cosmetic vessels and a copper mirror.
The ministry announced the discovery on May 31 and said the cache was found beneath a burial structure containing human remains. Fox News reported that the site lies in Heliopolis, the ancient Egyptian city it said is linked in Genesis to Joseph.
According to the ministry, the burial cache contained five pairs of yellow-colored metal earrings that archaeologists believe may be made of gold. Officials also released images showing carved scarabs and other small artifacts.
The ministry said excavators found two alabaster kohl containers with traces of ancient eye makeup, along with a third kohl container made of black obsidian. Four stones were also recovered, including two that are believed to be agate.
Officials described the cache as the first nearly complete funerary assemblage ever discovered in the area.
The ministry said the discovery builds on earlier finds from the same excavation season, including mudbrick and limestone funerary structures and two coffins found in fragmented condition.
